We return to the ship in time to unwind and prepare for dinner as we set sail for Arles, arriving later this evening.
After breakfast, set out to discover the captivating town of Arles, a place where history and culture come together in a truly unforgettable way. Known as the gateway to the Camargue, Arles flourished under Roman rule and still proudly displays its ancient heritage. Towering monuments such as the grand arena and the amphitheater, both dating back to the first century, stand as powerful reminders of its glorious past. Once called Little Rome in Gaul by Emperor Constantine, Arles invites you to step back in time.
During your visit, explore the impressive amphitheater, where gladiators once battled and crowds gathered for thrilling spectacles. This remarkable structure, still in use today for cultural events, offers sweeping views and a glimpse into ancient Roman life. Be prepared for some steep stairs as you make your way through this iconic site.
Beyond its Roman legacy, Arles charms visitors with a unique blend of Romanesque architecture, Provençal spirit, and vibrant Gypsy influences. The town’s warm colors and lively atmosphere reflect the same beauty that once inspired Vincent van Gogh, who created many of his most celebrated works here.
Admission to the amphitheater is included in your excursion. After the tour, return to the ship and enjoy the rest of the afternoon at your leisure. As evening falls and you prepare for dinner, the ship gently sets sail toward the next destination.
After breakfast, set off to explore one of the most breathtaking landscapes in southern France. Just a short distance from Viviers flows the Ardèche River, which over thousands of years has carved a spectacular path through limestone cliffs, creating a dramatic natural wonder. As you travel by coach, the road offers one stunning view after another of the turquoise-green river, winding its way through jagged rock formations and dense, emerald forests.
Your first stop is the Lavender Museum, where you will discover the story behind the plant that transforms Provence into a sea of purple each summer. Engaging multimedia displays provide a vivid look into the cultivation, harvesting, and distillation of this iconic flower, renowned for its delicate fragrance and soothing properties.
Following your visit, the journey continues through the scenic Ardèche Gorges, with several opportunities to pause for photos and fully appreciate the area’s rugged beauty.
