Day 2 – Ushuaia > Tierra del Fuego National Park > Ushuaia
Nestled amidst subantarctic forests, captivating waterfalls, snow-draped peaks, and enchanting glacial lakes, Tierra del Fuego National Park promises an unforgettable day of scenic exploration for travelers at the southernmost tip of Argentina. Your journey commences by crossing the Rio Pipo valley and ascending the slopes of Monte Susana, eventually arriving at the Austral Fueguino Railway station. This historic station once served as a labor site for inmates from Ushuaia’s former prison over a century ago. These early prisoners utilized the train to transport firewood, and the folklore tells of them even pushing the carriages when the steam locomotive’s pace waned. In 1994, this renowned train journey was resurrected using replica carriages, offering travelers the opportunity to step back in time and traverse the 7-kilometer distance back to Ushuaia. Along the way, you’ll traverse picturesque bridges, peat bogs, valleys, and farmlands before entering the national park.
Upon reaching the park, we’ll board our coach and proceed to witness the beauty of Lake Roca and Bahía Lapataia, both located along the Pan-American Route. At each site, you’ll be treated to awe-inspiring vistas and have the chance to meander among the unique species of native forests that are preserved solely within Argentina’s southernmost national park. This popular day excursion is a must for all Ushuaia visitors.
Our excursion commences with a journey along part of National Route No. 3, crossing the Pipo River valley and ascending the slopes of Mount Susana. We’ll arrive at the Austral Fueguino Railroad station, which was once an essential work site for inmates of the former Ushuaia prison. Following a stretch of the original prison train route, we’ll traverse bridges, peat bogs, and make a stop at the beautiful La Macarena waterfall. Continuing our journey, we’ll enter the Tierra del Fuego National Park, reaching the sector where the Lombardich sawmill was situated. The tour culminates at the “Park Station,” where our guide will be waiting to guide you through the park’s most captivating points and breathtaking landscapes.
Your exploration will take you to Lake Acigami (Rock) and Bahía Lapataia, which marks the end of National Route 3, a segment of the Pan-American Highway. During each stop, short walks will allow you to appreciate the diverse native forest species and preserved wildlife within Argentina’s southernmost National Park.
After forty years of dormancy, the End of the World Train recommenced a portion of the historic route that the prisoners’ train once followed. Departing from the Ushuaia prison located in the city center, the train’s purpose was to transport materials (wood and stone) for the prison’s construction from the slope of Mount Susana. The Main Train Station, situated just 7 km from Ushuaia, serves as the starting point for your journey. Here, you will have the opportunity to relive the last 7 kilometers of the route. Onboard the train, you’ll immerse yourself in the tales of the prisoners who toiled daily in this area to harvest wood. You’ll also be treated to stunning landscapes, featuring the winding Pipo River, La Macarena waterfall, the tree cemetery, and the grandeur of the tongue forest. This journey allows you to explore an otherwise inaccessible section of the Tierra del Fuego National Park. As you travel, you can savor this experience aboard a vintage railway, complete with steam locomotives and elegant carriages equipped with expansive windows and individual audio systems. The audio system offers a multilingual narration, enabling you to not only appreciate the surrounding nature but also delve into an essential chapter of Ushuaia’s history.
