Vantage Explorations’ Paddling Program offers a unique and immersive way to explore tropical destinations such as Costa Rica, Indonesia, and Borneo, from the water. Using small, human-powered crafts, you’ll glide quietly through lush mangroves, vibrant coral-fringed coastlines, and rainforest-lined rivers. This gentle activity brings you closer to nature, offering an unforgettable perspective on the rich biodiversity and serene beauty of tropical environments.
What's Involved
‘Getting out amongst it’ is our philosophy, and that is exactly what we do. As a paddler, you’ll enjoy all the standard landings alongside fellow expeditioners, plus the added bonus of a guided paddling excursion. This program offers a more accessible alternative to our Kayaking Program, providing a fun and memorable way to experience the water up close.
Ideal for beginners, the paddling activity is offered only in calm conditions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. With a spirit of adventure and a positive attitude, you’ll gain a unique perspective of each remote destination, making your journey truly unforgettable.
What You'll See
In small groups of up to eight paddlers, you'll enjoy a dedicated Zodiac and two experienced guides who will lead you to ideal paddling spots in tropical environments. Whether you're gliding through mangrove forests, coastal lagoons, or rainforest-lined rivers, your guides will seek out the best locations for both paddling and wildlife encounters.
Depending on the region and season, you may spot sea turtles, tropical birds, and even dolphins, all from the peaceful vantage point of your paddle craft.
Required Experience & Fitness
Our Paddling activity is suitable for beginners — no prior paddling experience is required. However, participants must be able to swim independently for at least 25 metres and feel confident in the water. You’ll also need to walk on uneven terrain such as gravel or pebble beaches and enter an inflatable kayak from knee level, requiring basic balance and mobility.
While the activity is low-impact, a moderate level of fitness will enhance your experience. We recommend maintaining regular gentle exercise, such as walking, to help you enjoy your time on the water comfortably and safely.
Weather Conditions
In Costa Rica and Panama, April marks the end of the dry season, with May bringing increased humidity and occasional afternoon rain showers. Temperatures range from 26–36 °C (80–96 °F), and water temperatures hover between 27–29 °C. Winds are generally light, though small swells or wind chop may occur, with winds up to 15 knots. Surf landings are unlikely, but paddling may involve gentle movement on the water. We do not paddle if wind conditions are too strong or if no sheltered areas are available.
In Indonesia and Borneo, our expeditions take place in October and November, during the shoulder season between the dry and wet periods. Expect warm, humid conditions, with temperatures typically ranging from 27–33 °C (81–91 °F) and water temperatures around 28–30 °C. Rain showers are possible, but paddling excursions are only offered in calm, safe conditions. These tropical environments offer lush scenery and rich biodiversity, making for a truly memorable paddling experience.

Our paddling activity is generally done in combination with a shore landing and we paddle close to shore. Your group will have a dedicated safety Zodiac, and your guide will be in constant radio contact with our ship captain and expedition leader if additional support is required.
Travel insurance including emergency evacuation coverage, is mandatory on all Aurora Expeditions voyages. You will need to ensure that your insurance policy covers you for your activity and any related equipment. An additional policy or premium may be required to ensure you have adequate coverage. Please contact us if you need assistance with your insurance policy.
It is your choice how often you want to paddle. If you decide to spend more time during a landing to explore ashore, you just need to let your guide know in advance. However, we do encourage you to get out as much as you can! Please note that the activity surcharge is non-refundable and we are unable to assist you if you change your mind once on board. If you decide to fully cancel your participation in the activity during the voyage, please be aware that you will not be entitled to a refund – neither partially nor fully. Contact our team for further details on our paddling cancellation policy.
