Day 4 – Buenos Aires

Discover Buenos Aires on a private city tour.

Embark on a private city tour of Buenos Aires, a city as diverse as it is captivating. This splendid metropolis boasts a rich tapestry of architectural styles, from colonial buildings to elegant French palaces and modern skyscrapers, making it one of the world’s most enthralling destinations. Buenos Aires pulses with a vibrant nightlife and a wealth of cultural offerings.

Today’s itinerary provides an immersive introduction to this sprawling city. Begin by visiting Plaza de Mayo, the historic heart of Buenos Aires, where you’ll encounter iconic landmarks such as the Presidential Palace, known as La Casa Rosada (the Pink House), the Cabildo, the city’s original town hall, and the Neoclassical Metropolitan Cathedral, the final resting place of Argentina’s founding father, José de San Martín. In the upscale district of Palermo Chico, you’ll marvel at impressive French palaces and meticulously designed parks created by renowned landscape architects, including the Frenchman Charles Thays.

As you explore Retiro and Recoleta, you’ll find yourself transported to the streets of Paris. Your journey will take you to the splendid Plaza San Martín, once frequented by the renowned writer Jorge Luis Borges. Meander down the elegant Avenida Alvear, adorned with boutiques representing the world’s top luxury brands and grand French-style mansions, many of which now house foreign embassies. Next, pay a visit to the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, one of the city’s oldest churches, completed in 1732. At Recoleta Cemetery, an ornate maze of mausoleums, you may choose to explore the famed resting place of Eva Perón, one of Argentina’s most iconic figures.

Continue your journey to Puerto Madero, one of the city’s newest neighborhoods. In 1991, its vast warehouses and silos were transformed to integrate the river into the city, creating a dynamic corporate, residential, and gastronomic district featuring trendy restaurants and bars. Afterward, make your way to San Telmo, one of Buenos Aires’ oldest neighborhoods. Once the preferred residential district of the city’s elite, it fell into decline and disrepair in the late 19th century due to a yellow fever epidemic. In the 1970s, the area’s affordability attracted artists and artisans, leading to its resurgence. Today, San Telmo is a lively neighborhood brimming with antique and vintage clothing shops. Stroll along its cobbled streets to Plaza Dorrego, renowned for its traditional antique fair held every Sunday. The streets and plazas of San Telmo often come alive with impromptu tango performances.

As you bid farewell to San Telmo, continue your journey southward to La Boca, one of Buenos Aires’ most authentic and charming neighborhoods. This working-class district was significantly influenced by Italian immigrants who arrived in Argentina in large numbers during the late 19th century. A walk along Caminito Street will immerse you in the spirit of Buenos Aires, with a fervent love for soccer, vibrant street art, and tango around every corner.

In the evening, savor a welcome dinner and show, an authentic Argentinian experience. Located in the heart of the San Telmo neighborhood, a historic conventillo has been transformed into an institution of Buenos Aires’ culture and nightlife. With 35 resident artists, two tango orchestras, a folklore band, dancers, and singers, paired with a menu offering traditional and international dishes along with Argentinean wines, you’ll enjoy a lively introduction to Buenos Aires.

Your overnight stay will be at the Intersur Recoleta. (B/D)

Day 5 – Buenos Aires

Today is a free day to explore the city at your own pace. You may like to visit a traditional gaucho ranch, further explore Buenos Aires on the famous hop-on hop-off bus, take a day tour to Uruguay, or enjoy a cruise along the Parana River Delta.
